a snowy video message plays. in the dense scramble a voice is heard. the voice of a woman. scared, confused. she calls out to you "Isaac, it's me... I wish I could talk to you. I'm sorry... I'm sorry about everything." she continues but her message is interrupted by static. we see you, Isaac Clark.
you sit aboard the USG Kelion, with it's crew of five, including you. it whips through space faster then light on it's way to the Aegis system in search of the mighty USG Ishimura, where her communications have been down for days, and as a CEC engineer it is your job to fix em. The Ishimura is a planet cracker, oldest and best of her kind. it's task is to remove large land mass from the crust of well resourced planets so that it can be hollowed out.
when the Kelion reaches the Aegis system, it is already apparent by the massive debris field in the outer orbit of planet 7, or Aegis 7, that the Ishimura has already popped the qork. navigating through the make shift asteroid field, you spot her. a massive hulk of a ship hovering above one of the biggest craters you'll ever see.
with the sun at it's aft, the ship hides in it's own shadow, and as you approach something goes wrong. while your pilot does his best to manuever inside the docking bay, a crash landing occurs and thus strands you and your team on this quiet vessel.
all crew members survive, you all walk to the security areas to be met by no one. trash and luggage litter the entire area as if people were trying to leave. it's dark and quiet for a ship with just over a thousand people on board.
your crew leader tells you to override a secruity order on the rooms main console. upon doing this a quarantine takes place, seperating you from the rest of the crew. you hear something. suddenly there's a loud crash where your crew mates are, they can't see but it sounds like someone or something is in the room with them. you see a dark figure come up behind one of them, and as the unsuspecting man is ripped to shreds by the unknown thing in the room, more come out of the ceiling and walls around you. you run for it... this is Dead Space.
the rest of the game finds you and your avatar Isaac roaming through the bowels of the Ishimura in search of your crew, your girlfriend, and the way out. unfortunately the ships gone straight to hell and boy does it want you to come get a t-shirt.
for space horror/thriller movie lovers, this games' story alone would make you cream your pants. while the plot pays homage to many classics such as the Alien franchise, Event Horizon, 2001, Solaris, and John Carpenters the Thing... it brings more than it's share of originality and mystery to cook up one of the more entertaining stories i've ever encountered. not to mention the game play is just spot on. you know a game is going to be nothing but greatness when the back of the box says "startegic dismemberment." that's like getting a real AK-47 for xmas, when you're ten.
the main enemy in this game, besides the over eerie atmosphere, are called Necromorphs. a type of zombie-fied abomination fit only for such a gory game. once crew members of the Ishimura, these lurking horrible things have one soul purpose, kill you in the most goryfied way possible. but don't worry you get to do the same.
while Isaac is no soldier, as an engineer he sure is handy with a plasma cutter(think if Han Solo had a nail gun) this small but very effective pistol like tool will help you cut down the threat when ever need be. but that's just it, a necromorph(being dead already) can take plenty of punishment, even without a head. that's right, shoot a necros head off and you'll only piss it off. shoot both legs out from under it, then it'll crawl toward you. and beware the ones that go down a lil too easily, they love to play possum.
shit ran out of time, tbc.
